The National Safety Council sponsors a program in the month of April for Distracted Driving Awareness. It is a program that aims to clue consumers in on just how frequently people drive distracted and what the risks of doing so are. “Distracted driving” is a term used to describe any type of driving in which a person is not 100 percent focused on the road in front of them. Today, technology, such as the use of mobile phones, is making it harder to focus on the road, and that has led to an increase in the number of motor vehicle accidents and auto insurance claims that occur.
How Can People Be Better Drivers?
Its time to take a bigger look at the simple changes that people can take to reduce the risk of distracted driving as well as lower the risk of having to make car insurance claims. Some recommendations from the National Safety Council include the following:
- Change the way you communicate in vehicles. If a call cannot wait, pull over to take it. Or use voice-automated vehicles to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.
- Keep your cell phone in the backseat while driving so that you are less likely to answer it.
- If you are unable to focus on the road, because of emotional stress or other reasons, pull over instead of driving.
- Encourage employees to drive without cell phones available to them. Employers can significantly impact the actions that individuals take on the road.
- Take an online distracted driving test or even improve your skills behind the wheel by taking a driving course. Improving driving minimizes risks.
- Avoid loud music or watching TV in the vehicle as well.
- Teens should also limit the number of people they transport in their vehicle at any given time to reduce these risks.
Distracted driving is something that impacts everyone on the road no matter if you are the driver or the person that is struck by such a driver. Yet individuals can minimize these risks by taking the pledge during Distracted Driving Awareness Month not to drive with a cell phone within reach. It could save your life.
We care about your safety.
